Katugende… the TITLE
As you’ve probably guessed if you’ve read my past reviews, I like to think of myself as a free spirited, lateral thinking being that doesn’t need boxes or titles to define me…
Then, contrarily I talk about titles of Albums, Products, Plays and TV shows, and how they are the single and clear premise that quickly identifies what the thing I’m reviewing is about.
I blame my monolingual, boxed English only speaking self.
And so, as predicted, the first thing I did when listening to the latest album by Kalungi Fresh is ask....
Although it didn’t have a direct answer [it’s boxed to] - I found this.
As well as artist David Lutalo
A Ugandan artist - the same place Kalungi was born!
David has a song called Tugende too..
[Tungende is red marked in Word as it too is boxed]
And so - at the start line of my investigation of the (partial) title (KA)Tugende
- I was led back (g)round to this –
Tungende - the means of transport in the capital city Kampalaa (Kampalaa is the capital of UGANDA)
And there it is!
What about the KA – I hear you ask?
Now… like I said,
I only speak English... [and that definitely limits me!]
Maybe alongside this, is the arrogance of thinking my thoughts make things fact
I acknowledge this…
and so I think that the KA in the title is simply Kampalaa (capital of Uganda)
But I guess
Either way - the title, like it should sign posts me straight towards the Kampalaa experience I’m about to tune into.
Immersed through sound into Kampalaa, ooh lala (track 2)
a place only visited through the vibrations of this album - Kalungi’s new and exciting 8 tracks
Spiced up my life?
[Detach from the Spice Girls and think of actual flavour]
It isn’t simply and afro beats album but a fusion of Kalungi’s personal journey – born in Uganda, growing up in London and influenced by a host of genres including hip hop, RnB, and afro beats all evident in the mix!
But It's its London undertones that hooked me, and Kalungi’s word play reeled me in, with his eclectic ability to rap, sing and speak another language all making me crave for more!
It's important to highlight that Kalungi Fresh is also an Actor and Writer as well as a Musician, all of which contributes to the density of Katugende –
and therefore requires its listener to let go of music being a [genre],
a new sound.
Track 3 - Hold you Down ft Georgina sums it up
"When I dive in your loving just let me drown… don’t save me"
As I went on the back of Kalungi’s boda boda
- we drove down the hills of loneliness and
I let go
Although Google didn't have the answer... Kalungi did.
KATUGENDE = LET'S GO!
Listen to and let go to Katugende - HERE
Because some words my [boxed] self didn't know
